The Story of the Atlantic Telegraph
·
Henry M. Field
197
[B]
The
history
of
this
despatch
is
curious.
Though
dated
at
London,
it
was
sent
from
a
small
town
in
Ireland.
The
directors
were
on
their
way
from
Dublin
to
Valentia,
on
the
morning
of
the
first
of
September,
when
Mr.
Saward
remarked:
"This
is
the
day
of
the
celebration
in
New
York--we
ought
to
send
a
despatch
to
Mr.
Field."
Accordingly,
at
the
first
stopping-place
(Mallow
Station)
the
message
was
written,
and
forwarded
to
Valentia,
and
thence
sent
across
the
Atlantic.
It
was
put
into
Mr.
Field's
hand
as
he
was
getting
into
his
carriage
on
the
Battery.
